October 10, 2026: Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi arrived in Chennai on Saturday to participate in the party’s student outreach programme, Chhatron Ki Goonj, aimed at highlighting issues concerning education, employment and the future of young people.
The programme is being held at Island Grounds in Chennai and is expected to bring together thousands of registered students. The initiative is part of the Congress party’s broader effort to engage with young people and hear their concerns about educational opportunities, examination policies and employment prospects.
According to the event details, entry for registered participants is being managed through QR codes.
NEET, Education Costs and Jobs on the Agenda
The Chennai programme is expected to focus on several issues affecting students, including the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), rising education costs, access to quality education and employment opportunities.
The initiative seeks to provide students with a platform to express their concerns and discuss policies affecting their academic and professional futures.
NEET has remained a significant subject of debate in Tamil Nadu, where questions surrounding medical entrance examinations, access to education and the interests of students have featured prominently in public discussions.
Employment opportunities and the affordability of education are also key concerns for young people preparing to enter an increasingly competitive job market.
Through Chhatron Ki Goonj, the Congress is seeking to connect with students directly and bring youth-related issues into wider political and policy discussions.
Congress Expands Student Outreach
The Chennai event forms part of a wider outreach effort by the Congress, with similar programmes being organised in cities including Kota, Pune and Indore.
The initiative is intended to engage students from different educational backgrounds and understand their views on the challenges facing India’s education system.
By focusing on examinations, education expenses and employment, the party aims to highlight concerns that affect students and their families across the country.
The participation of a large number of students is expected to make the Chennai programme an important part of the party’s ongoing youth engagement efforts.
Meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
During his visit, Rahul Gandhi is also scheduled to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay before leaving Chennai later in the evening.
The meeting is expected to draw attention given the political significance of both leaders and the broader political developments in the state. However, details of the meeting’s agenda were not immediately available.
Gandhi’s visit comes amid continuing political discussions at the national level, while the Chennai programme places the focus on student concerns and youth-oriented policy issues.
The event is expected to provide an opportunity for students to raise questions about education, examinations, employment and the policy decisions that could shape their future.
