JUNE 22: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today laid the foundation stones for two major forensic science infrastructure projects in Chhattisgarh’s Nava Raipur–Atal Nagar—the new National Forensic Science University (NFSU) campus and an adjacent Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). This announcement was made during his two-day visit to the state, which will also include a strategic review of anti-Naxal operations.
The state government has allocated 40 acres for the NFSU campus, with the central government committing approximately ₹400 crore to its construction. Additionally, a 6–7 acre parcel will be devoted to the CFSL, strengthening local forensic capabilities.
Deputy CM Vijay Sharma highlighted the alignment of these projects with the implementation of India’s new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—effective July 1, 2024. He noted that the enhanced forensic infrastructure would equip law enforcement to handle serious crimes with modern evidence-based tools.
During the ceremony, Shah was welcomed by CM Vishnu Deo Sai, Assembly Speaker Raman Singh, ministers, and senior police officials. The visit also includes meetings to strategize anti-Maoist operations, with Shah reviewing security plans in Bastar the following day.
These investments form part of a broader national push to bolster forensic infrastructure. Earlier, Shah inaugurated a new CFSL in Rajarhat, Kolkata, with a ₹2,080 crore package announced for seven additional CFSLs and nine new NFSU campuses across India. Plans include establishing a national forensic data centre powered by AI.
The NFSU, originally founded in Gujarat and later upgraded as an Institution of National Importance, now operates multiple campuses, including one in Uganda. Chhattisgarh’s new campus will further decentralize forensic education and enhance regional law enforcement capacity.
This twin-launch underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing India’s criminal justice system, integrating advanced forensic science into everyday policing, and reinforcing anti-Naxal initiatives before the 2026 deadline for wiping out left-wing extremism.
