DEC 16 : In a decisive move to enhance road safety and ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations, the Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO) Bandipora conducted a special traffic enforcement drive at Papchan on the directions of the Transport Commissioner, Jammu and Kashmir.

During the drive, more than 140 vehicles were inspected, and enforcement action was taken against violators of traffic norms. The team issued 25 compoundable challans, imposing fines amounting to ₹30,600, reflecting a zero-tolerance approach towards traffic violations that pose risks to public safety.

Focus on High-Risk Traffic Violations

The enforcement drive specifically targeted common yet dangerous traffic violations that are known to contribute significantly to road accidents and fatalities. These included:

  • Riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets, increasing the risk of serious head injuries

  • Driving four-wheelers without seat belts, compromising occupant safety

  • Operating vehicles without functional speed-limiting devices, especially in commercial vehicles

  • Wrong or unauthorized parking, leading to congestion and obstruction of traffic flow

  • Driving without valid motor insurance, a direct violation of the Motor Vehicles Act that leaves accident victims uncompensated

Officials emphasized that such violations not only endanger the lives of drivers and passengers but also pose a serious threat to pedestrians and other road users.

Creating Deterrence Through Visible Enforcement

Officials from ARTO Bandipora stated that targeted enforcement drives are aimed at deterring habitual offenders, creating visible deterrence, and reinforcing the message that non-compliance with traffic laws will invite strict legal and financial consequences.

“Traffic rules are meant to save lives. Enforcement is necessary to instill discipline and ensure safer roads for everyone,” an official said, adding that similar drives will continue across the district in the coming days.

Ensuring Safer Roads in Bandipora

The transport department reiterated that wearing helmets and seat belts, maintaining valid documents, and adhering to parking and speed norms are non-negotiable responsibilities of every road user. Public cooperation is crucial in reducing accidents and ensuring smooth traffic movement, particularly in busy and accident-prone areas.

Authorities also appealed to vehicle owners to regularly check compliance with safety requirements, including insurance validity and vehicle fitness, to avoid penalties and legal action.

More Drives Planned

The ARTO Bandipora team confirmed that regular and surprise traffic checking drives will be conducted across the district to promote road discipline and enhance public safety. The department remains committed to enforcing the Motor Vehicles Act in letter and spirit.

The drive was conducted with the support of Information & Public Relations, J&K, District Administration Bandipora.
