July 17: The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has launched the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047), a transformative roadmap aimed at aligning India’s automotive sector with the ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’ vision. Building on the success of previous Automotive Mission Plans, this strategic initiative seeks to position India as a global leader in the automobile industry through innovation, sustainability, and enhanced global competitiveness.
The inaugural meeting of the AMP 2047 Sub-Committees marked the beginning of an industry-led collaborative effort. Additional Secretary, Dr. Hanif Qureshi, emphasized that AMP 2047 is a strategic blueprint, not just an aspiration, focused on concrete targets for exports, technology development, and market share expansion. “India must go beyond short-term goals and work toward increasing its share in the global automotive trade by focusing on innovation, quality, and sustainable practices,” he said.
The initiative brings together multiple stakeholders, including ministries, industry associations (SIAM, ACMA, CII, FICCI), academia, testing agencies, and think tanks, ensuring a holistic approach. Key ministries such as Power, Road Transport, Commerce, Petroleum, and Environment are involved, reflecting the cross-sectoral importance of this mission.
Seven dedicated Sub-Committees will shape AMP 2047, setting phased targets for 2030, 2037, and 2047. These committees will address core challenges like technological advancements, EV charging infrastructure, sustainability in manufacturing, and global supply chain integration. The mission’s ultimate goal is to foster a self-reliant and globally competitive automotive ecosystem that thrives on green mobility and cutting-edge technology.
Under the guidance of Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, MHI has reaffirmed its commitment to building a strong industrial base aligned with India’s net-zero vision. The Apex Committee, chaired by Secretary Shri Kamran Rizvi, will oversee the consolidation of ideas and data from sub-committees, shaping a final action-oriented framework.
By enabling policy alignment, supporting innovation, and driving global trade competitiveness, AMP 2047 promises to accelerate India’s journey toward becoming a top-tier automotive manufacturing hub, ensuring the sector contributes significantly to the nation’s economic growth and environmental sustainability goals.
