AUG 22: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today chaired a high-level meeting to review the relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken for the people affected by the recent cloudbursts in Kishtwar and Kathua districts.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister was briefed by senior officials about the scale of damages, rescue operations, and the ongoing support being provided to the affected families. He directed the administration to ensure speedy delivery of assistance, particularly to those who have lost their homes, livelihood, and essential belongings in the calamity.

Omar Abdullah emphasized the immediate restoration of essential services, including road connectivity, electricity, and water supply, in the affected regions. He noted that timely restoration would not only bring relief to residents but also help facilitate continued rescue and rehabilitation operations.

The Chief Minister also called for a detailed damage assessment report to identify the requirements for compensation and long-term rehabilitation packages. Stressing the need to safeguard vulnerable communities, he instructed concerned departments to design long-term mitigation measures to reduce risks from such natural disasters in the future. This, he said, would involve strengthening early-warning systems, improving drainage and flood-control infrastructure, and enforcing construction safety norms in fragile zones.

Acknowledging the resilience of the people of Kishtwar and Kathua, Omar Abdullah assured them of the government’s full support. He praised the efforts of rescue teams, local administration, and community volunteers for their tireless work under challenging circumstances.

The Chief Minister reiterated that protecting lives and livelihoods remains the top priority and that every effort will be made to ensure affected families receive timely relief, financial aid, and proper rehabilitation.
