JUNE 26: In a significant move aimed at boosting Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism appeal, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced his government’s commitment to developing Gulmarg into a world-class golf destination. During his visit to the scenic hill station, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for multiple key tourism infrastructure projects and flagged off a high-energy cyclothon event, further promoting eco-friendly tourism and adventure sports.
Speaking at the occasion, CM Omar Abdullah highlighted the vast potential of Gulmarg to evolve beyond its winter sports fame. “Gulmarg has long been known for skiing and snow tourism. Our focus now is to make it a year-round attraction by enhancing its golf facilities and building the necessary infrastructure to welcome tourists from across the globe,” he said.
The foundation stone was laid for various development works including improvements to existing golf infrastructure, construction of tourist-friendly amenities, and the creation of eco-conscious lodging facilities. These projects are designed not only to increase tourist footfall but also to generate local employment and support sustainable economic growth in the region.
In addition, the Chief Minister flagged off a cyclothon from the heart of Gulmarg, which saw enthusiastic participation from local youth, adventure tourists, and professional cyclists. The event underscored the administration’s commitment to promoting fitness, environment-friendly tourism, and an active lifestyle among residents and visitors.
Officials from the Department of Tourism, local panchayat representatives, and members of the hospitality sector were present during the visit. Many hailed the initiative as a timely intervention to rejuvenate tourism in Kashmir’s most iconic destinations.
