JUNE 26: A powerful reminder of India’s fight to preserve democracy and civil liberties was unveiled today as the 1975 Emergency Exhibition was inaugurated at the Convention Centre in Jammu. The exhibition marks the anniversary of one of the darkest and most controversial chapters in the history of independent India — the imposition of the Emergency on June 25, 1975.

This specially curated exhibition aims to educate citizens, especially the youth, about the harsh realities of the 21-month Emergency period when constitutional rights were suspended, press freedom was curtailed, and thousands of political leaders and activists were jailed without trial. Through photographs, newspaper clippings, rare documents, and personal accounts, the exhibit brings to life the fear, silence, and resistance that marked that era.

Inaugurating the exhibition, dignitaries and speakers highlighted how civil liberties were trampled, constitutional mechanisms were misused, and the soul of the democratic republic was pushed to its limits. They recalled how the dreams of a free and inclusive India were momentarily buried, and how the people’s movement ultimately restored democratic values through resilience and unity.

The Emergency, declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saw massive political repression. The exhibit narrates how prominent opposition leaders were detained, censorship was imposed, and ordinary citizens lived under constant fear. It also showcases how voices of dissent continued to emerge from the shadows, paving the way for the return of democracy in 1977.

Organizers of the exhibition stated that it is not just a remembrance of the past, but a call to remain vigilant in defending democracy, civil rights, and the spirit of the Constitution. The exhibition has already begun attracting students, civil society members, historians, and journalists eager to understand the full impact of the Emergency.

As the nation observes this solemn anniversary, the 1975 Emergency Exhibition serves as a stark reminder of how fragile democratic freedoms can be — and how crucial it is to protect them.
