MARCH 9:The Jammu & Kashmir Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Jammu concluded a comprehensive two-day workshop on Crime Scene Management, focusing on the implications of India’s newly enacted criminal laws. The workshop, held on Saturday, brought together officials from District Mobile Forensic Units and forensic experts to discuss the practical aspects of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).
The event commenced with an inaugural address by Gurmukh Singh, Director of FSL J&K, who highlighted the advancements in forensic technology and their increasing role in criminal investigations, especially with the introduction of new legislative frameworks. Singh emphasized the importance of modernizing forensic capabilities to ensure they align with the evolving legal landscape. He stressed that updating forensic practices was crucial to keeping pace with the new laws and improving the efficiency of criminal investigations. Shiv Pal Singh, Accounts Officer at JKFSL, also attended the event as a special guest.
Dr. Kumar Sourabh, Deputy Director of FSL Jammu, delivered the opening session and focused on the significance of scientific crime scene management. He outlined how the responsibilities of forensic laboratories have expanded under the new laws. Dr. Sourabh reiterated the importance of continuous professional development and specialized training programs to ensure that the forensic teams are equipped with the necessary skills to tackle emerging challenges in crime scene management.
Ankush Kumar, Deputy Director of the Narcotics/Chemical Division of FSL Jammu, served as the workshop coordinator. He explained that the main objective of the workshop was to improve investigative skills and ensure that the District Mobile Forensic Units in Jammu and Kashmir are adequately prepared to handle complex crime scene investigations. This aligns with the state’s commitment to enhancing its forensic infrastructure and responding effectively to the evolving demands of law enforcement.
The workshop covered a range of topics crucial for effective crime scene management. Rakesh Hangloo, a forensic expert, provided an overview of different types of crime scenes and their significance in investigations. Rohit Koul, another forensic expert, discussed the principles of Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), emphasizing the vital role forensic teams play in the investigative process.
This workshop reflects a crucial step in ensuring that J&K’s forensic teams remain at the forefront of modern investigative practices, especially as forensic science evolves alongside technological and legal advancements. The participants left with a deeper understanding of the central role of forensic science in the criminal justice system, along with enhanced techniques for crime scene investigation.
