MAY 05: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs and Youth Services & Sports, Satish Sharma, held a detailed interaction with Shikara owners operating in Dal Lake, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protect their livelihoods while promoting sustainable tourism in the Kashmir Valley.

Accompanied by Transport Commissioner Vishesh Paul Mahajan and senior departmental officials, the Minister engaged directly with dozens of boat operators who shared their everyday challenges. The interaction was aimed at understanding grassroots-level concerns and devising actionable solutions in coordination with the concerned departments.

During the meeting, the Shikara owners voiced several pressing issues. Among the primary concerns were difficulties in obtaining and renewing licenses, which they said involved excessive delays and procedural hurdles. They also sought financial and technical assistance for boat repair and maintenance, citing rising costs and lack of access to support schemes.

Environmental degradation of Dal Lake was another significant concern raised by the boatmen. They highlighted the impact of pollution, weed overgrowth, and inadequate lake cleaning operations that affect both navigation and the overall appeal of the lake to tourists. The boatmen also requested better infrastructure around the lake, including improved ghats, signage, and safety measures to ensure a seamless experience for both tourists and operators.

Minister Satish Sharma assured the gathering that their concerns would be taken up at the appropriate forums. He emphasized that the government is fully committed to preserving the cultural and economic importance of the Shikara community, which forms an essential part of the region’s tourism ecosystem.

“We are here to listen, understand, and act. Every effort will be made to simplify licensing procedures, explore financial aid options, and improve infrastructure and environmental upkeep,” the Minister said.

The interaction concluded with a promise of continued dialogue, with officials directed to prepare a follow-up action plan in consultation with stakeholders.
