AUG 28: Reasi, J&K | Continuous heavy rainfall across Reasi district has triggered a sharp rise in water levels of rivers and streams, particularly the Chenab River, which is flowing in full spate. The situation has raised concerns for residents of low-lying and flood-prone areas.
According to officials, the incessant downpour over the past 24 hours has led to overflowing of several local streams, creating the risk of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable zones. The District Administration Reasi, in coordination with District Police Reasi, has appealed to the public to exercise utmost caution and avoid venturing close to riverbanks or water channels.
The administration has also activated its disaster management teams and placed them on high alert. Relief and rescue measures are being closely monitored, with special focus on vulnerable habitations situated along the Chenab River and its tributaries. The authorities have urged people to refrain from unnecessary travel in hilly and landslide-prone stretches, as continued rainfall may worsen road conditions.
The Department of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) Reasi and other communication channels have been tasked to issue timely advisories and keep citizens updated about weather alerts. Doordarshan Kendra Jammu and other media outlets are amplifying these warnings to ensure maximum public reach.
The J&K Police have assured round-the-clock assistance and have intensified patrolling in sensitive areas. Emergency helplines have been kept functional for the public to report any flood-like situations or distress cases.
Officials have further appealed to people residing near the Chenab belt to stay vigilant and keep emergency essentials ready. Farmers and cattle owners have also been advised to shift livestock and belongings from vulnerable areas to safer locations.
While the rains have brought relief from the recent dry spell, the intensity of the downpour has created widespread concern. The Meteorological Department has predicted that moderate to heavy showers may continue in some parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the next 48 hours, which may lead to further swelling of rivers.
The administration has reiterated that the safety of lives remains the top priority, urging citizens to cooperate with authorities and strictly adhere to advisories until the situation stabilizes.
