NOV 06: India has taken significant strides to enhance its trade and economic engagement with Latin America, successfully concluding two major negotiation rounds with Peru and Chile. These developments underscore India’s commitment to strengthening partnerships across the region and promoting mutually beneficial growth.
The 9th Round of India–Peru Trade Agreement negotiations took place in Lima, Peru, from 3rd to 5th November 2025, achieving notable progress across several key chapters — including trade in goods and services, rules of origin, technical barriers to trade, customs procedures, dispute settlement, and cooperation on critical minerals.
The closing session was attended by H.E. Teresa Stella Mera Gómez, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru, and H.E. César Augusto Llona Silva, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade. The Indian delegation was led by Shri Vimal Anand, Joint Secretary and Chief Negotiator, along with H.E. Vishvas Vidu Sapkal, Ambassador of India to Peru.
Minister Gómez reiterated Peru’s commitment to timely completion of the agreement, while Ambassador Sapkal emphasized the potential for collaboration in sectors like critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles, and food processing. The next round of talks is scheduled in New Delhi in January 2026.
Earlier, the 3rd Round of India–Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations was held in Santiago, Chile, from 27th to 30th October 2025. Both nations reviewed chapters on trade, investment, IPR, and critical minerals, reaffirming their commitment to an early, time-bound conclusion.
India’s growing trade engagement with Peru and Chile reflects its broader vision of deepening economic integration and expanding strategic cooperation with the Latin American region.
