Jan 19: In a landmark step towards harnessing India’s vast ocean potential, India’s first-ever Marine Fish Farming Project was launched from the Andaman Sea at North Bay. The pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards realising the vision of a robust Blue Economy, as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
The project is being undertaken through collaboration between the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, and the Union Territory Administration of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It introduces cage-based marine fish farming using advanced open-sea cage technology, positioning India among nations adopting modern aquaculture practices in open waters.
Describing the initiative as a transformational step, officials highlighted that the project will empower fishing communities by providing sustainable livelihood opportunities, increasing marine fish production, and reducing pressure on near-shore fishing zones. The use of scientific and technology-driven methods is expected to enhance productivity while ensuring ecological balance.
