Jammu and Kashmir is observing its Union Territory (UT) Foundation Day on October 31, commemorating the historic administrative reorganisation that came into effect on the same date in 2019.
On October 31, 2019, the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into two separate Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir, with a legislature, and Ladakh, without a legislature. The change marked a significant milestone in the administrative and constitutional history of the region.
The occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on the region’s journey since the reorganisation while celebrating its rich cultural heritage, diverse traditions and distinctive identity.
Jammu and Kashmir is known for its remarkable diversity, encompassing the spiritual and cultural traditions of Jammu, the scenic beauty and artistic heritage of Kashmir, and the unique customs of its different communities. From its traditional handicrafts, music, cuisine and festivals to its historic monuments and natural landscapes, the region represents an important part of India’s cultural richness.
The UT Foundation Day also highlights the contributions of the people of Jammu and Kashmir towards preserving its traditions, strengthening social harmony and participating in the region’s development.
Over the years, the day has become an occasion to recognise the aspirations of the people and reflect on priorities such as infrastructure development, tourism promotion, education, healthcare, employment opportunities and improved public services.
As Jammu and Kashmir marks seven years as a Union Territory, the occasion celebrates its enduring spirit, cultural diversity and hopes for a progressive future.
The day serves as a reminder of the region’s historical legacy and its continuing journey towards development, peace and prosperity.
