5 June: The Transport Department of Jammu and Kashmir has cancelled the motor vehicle aggregator licence of Ola after the company allegedly failed to meet mandatory regulatory and safety requirements despite being issued multiple notices by the authorities.

Officials said the action was taken following a review of compliance standards applicable to app-based transport aggregators operating in the Union Territory. The department emphasized that adherence to safety regulations and operational guidelines is essential for all platforms providing passenger transport services.

Speaking on the development, Jasmeet Singh said that public safety remains the foremost priority of the department. He noted that aggregator companies are required to comply with prescribed norms related to passenger security, operational transparency, and regulatory obligations.

According to the department, repeated opportunities were provided to address the compliance concerns. However, the required standards were reportedly not fulfilled, leading to the cancellation of the licence.

Officials stated that the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to ensuring that transport service providers operate within the framework of established laws and regulations. They stressed that regulatory compliance is necessary to safeguard passenger interests and maintain accountability in the growing app-based mobility sector.

The department also clarified that applications from other aggregator platforms are being examined carefully before approval. In this regard, the application submitted by Rapido has been kept on hold until all regulatory requirements are fully met.

Transport authorities said that no aggregator platform will be permitted to operate unless it satisfies the conditions laid down under the relevant transport and motor vehicle regulations.

The rise of app-based transport services has transformed urban mobility across India, offering commuters convenient travel options. However, regulators have increasingly emphasized the need for strong compliance mechanisms to ensure passenger safety, driver verification, data security, and service accountability.

Industry observers note that state and Union Territory administrations have become more vigilant in monitoring aggregator platforms as the sector continues to expand. Regulatory compliance has emerged as a key requirement for ensuring safe and efficient transport services.

The Transport Department reiterated that all companies seeking to provide aggregator services in Jammu and Kashmir must strictly adhere to prescribed guidelines and obtain necessary approvals before commencing operations.

Officials added that enforcement measures will continue against any entity found violating transport regulations or operating without fulfilling statutory obligations.

The latest decision underscores the administration’s focus on strengthening regulatory oversight while prioritizing passenger safety and lawful operation of transport services across Jammu and Kashmir.
