JAN : 2 Dense fog conditions across several parts of the country have disrupted rail services, leading to significant delays in train movement and inconvenience to passengers. According to Indian Railways, at least 31 trains are running behind schedule by more than two hours due to poor visibility caused by thick fog, particularly during early morning and late-night hours.

Winter fog is a recurring challenge for rail operations in northern and central regions of India, where visibility often drops sharply, affecting safe train movement. Railway officials stated that precautionary speed restrictions have been imposed on several routes to ensure passenger safety, which has contributed to delays in long-distance and express train services.

Indian Railways has issued an advisory urging passengers to check the latest train running status before arriving at railway stations. Officials emphasised that real-time updates are being shared through official railway enquiry systems, mobile applications and helpline numbers to help passengers plan their journeys more efficiently.

Railway authorities are closely monitoring weather conditions and coordinating with field staff to minimise disruption. Fog safety devices, including GPS-based signalling aids and anti-collision systems, are being utilised to maintain operational safety during low-visibility conditions. Despite these measures, delays remain unavoidable in extreme fog to prevent accidents and ensure safe operations.

Passengers travelling during this period have been advised to keep buffer time in their travel plans and stay informed through authorised railway platforms. Senior railway officials also assured that efforts are underway to regulate train movement and gradually restore normal schedules as visibility improves during the day.

The impact of dense fog has once again highlighted the challenges posed by seasonal weather patterns on India’s vast rail network. While safety remains the top priority, Indian Railways continues to work towards improving fog mitigation infrastructure and technology to reduce disruptions in the future.

As weather conditions fluctuate during the winter season, passengers are encouraged to remain patient and cooperative. Indian Railways reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and convenience, assuring that all necessary steps are being taken to manage operations efficiently amid adverse weather conditions.
