SEP 02: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, will host a National Conference on the Rights of Transgender Persons on 4th September 2025 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. Themed “Revamping Spaces, Reclaiming Voices,” the event will address systemic discrimination, promote meaningful inclusion, and uplift the lived experiences of transgender persons. Justice Shri V. Ramasubramanian, Chairperson, NHRC, will preside as Chief Guest.
The day-long conference will bring together government officials, policymakers, judicial experts, civil society leaders, academics, law enforcement agencies, and media representatives to deliberate on legal, social, and institutional measures to protect and empower transgender individuals. Key focus areas include reviewing the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, assessing welfare schemes such as SMILE and Garima Greh, and recommending policy interventions to enhance access to healthcare, education, employment, and social protection.
NHRC has previously conducted assessments of Garima Greh shelters to identify gaps in coverage, infrastructure, and reintegration support, ensuring that rehabilitation efforts are effective and dignified. The conference will build upon these findings and discuss strengthening institutional care for gender non-conforming children, elderly transgender persons, and establishing inclusive frameworks in law enforcement.
The final session will showcase success stories and pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and skill development, highlighting resilience and community achievements. Participants will collaborate to identify actionable recommendations for inclusive policy design and implementation, while celebrating the contributions of transgender persons to India’s social and cultural fabric.
Through this initiative, NHRC emphasizes that integrating transgender persons into mainstream society is both a legal obligation and a moral imperative. The conference aims to pave the way for transformative change, ensuring dignity, equality, and opportunity for every transgender person in India.
