16 May: A major boost to higher education infrastructure in Udhampur was witnessed as Sakina Itoo inaugurated the newly constructed Government Degree College building at Majalta, developed at an estimated cost of ₹13 crore.

The modern college facility is expected to improve academic conditions, student accessibility, and overall educational infrastructure for students from Majalta and nearby areas who previously relied on rented accommodations for college studies.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by R. S. Pathania, Commissioner Secretary Higher Education Ram Niwas Sharma, Director Colleges Dr. Sheikh Ajaz Bashir, senior officials, faculty members, and local residents.

Speaking on the occasion, Sakina Itoo said the Omar Abdullah-led government remains committed to strengthening the education sector and expanding quality higher education infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir.

She stated that improved educational facilities are essential for empowering youth and creating better academic opportunities in both rural and urban regions of the Union Territory.

The minister noted that the newly established college building would provide students with a more suitable learning environment equipped with improved classrooms, academic spaces, and essential facilities needed for higher education.

Officials said the new infrastructure would help address long-standing challenges faced by students and faculty due to inadequate facilities in rented premises.

Sakina Itoo also highlighted the government’s focus on improving the teacher-student ratio in colleges and educational institutions. She said efforts are being made to address staff shortages through a transparent and systematic process aimed at strengthening the quality of education.

According to officials, the Higher Education Department is working on measures to improve faculty availability, academic management, and institutional efficiency across government colleges in Jammu and Kashmir.

Education experts often emphasise that modern infrastructure plays a vital role in improving student participation, academic performance, and access to higher education, particularly in remote and semi-rural regions.

Local residents welcomed the inauguration of the new college building and described it as an important development for the area’s educational future. Many students and parents expressed hope that the improved infrastructure would encourage more young people, especially girls, to pursue higher studies without facing transportation and accommodation difficulties.

The development also reflects the administration’s broader focus on strengthening public education infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir through investments in schools, colleges, digital learning facilities, and institutional upgrades.

Observers note that expanding educational access in districts such as Udhampur is essential for improving employment opportunities, skill development, and long-term socio-economic growth.

The government has repeatedly stated that education remains one of its key priorities, with efforts underway to modernise institutions, improve faculty strength, and provide students with better academic facilities.

The inauguration of the new Government Degree College building at Majalta is therefore being seen as an important step toward enhancing educational opportunities and strengthening the higher education network in the region.
