Jan 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed happiness over the inclusion of Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh and Chhari-Dhand in Kutch district of Gujarat in the prestigious list of Ramsar wetlands of international importance. The recognition marks another milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to conserve vital ecosystems and protect biodiversity.
In a social media post, the Prime Minister congratulated the local citizens of Etah and Kutch, along with all individuals and organisations actively involved in wetland conservation. He said the inclusion of these sites in the Ramsar list reaffirms the government’s strong commitment to preserving natural habitats and safeguarding ecologically sensitive areas.
Strengthening India’s Wetland Conservation Efforts
Prime Minister Modi noted that wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by supporting biodiversity, regulating water cycles, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. He expressed hope that the newly recognised wetlands would continue to thrive as safe and nurturing habitats for both migratory and native bird species.
Patna Bird Sanctuary, located along the Yamuna River, is known for hosting a wide variety of resident and migratory birds, especially during the winter season. The sanctuary attracts bird watchers and nature enthusiasts from across the country and plays a key role in preserving avian diversity in the region.
Similarly, Chhari-Dhand wetland in Gujarat’s Kutch region is a unique seasonal saltwater marsh that serves as an important stopover and breeding ground for migratory birds, including flamingos, pelicans and other waterfowl. Its recognition as a Ramsar site highlights its ecological significance at the global level.
Global Recognition Under the Ramsar Convention
The Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, recognises sites that are of significant ecological importance. Inclusion in the Ramsar list brings global attention, promotes sustainable management practices and encourages community participation in conservation.
With the addition of these two wetlands, India continues to strengthen its presence among countries committed to protecting wetlands as critical natural resources. The government has repeatedly emphasised that wetland conservation is essential not only for biodiversity but also for livelihoods, water security and climate resilience.
Community Role in Conservation
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of community involvement in preserving wetlands, stating that local participation is key to ensuring long-term sustainability. He expressed confidence that awareness generated through Ramsar recognition would help promote eco-friendly tourism, scientific research and conservation-led development.
The inclusion of Patna Bird Sanctuary and Chhari-Dhand in the Ramsar list stands as a testament to India’s growing focus on environmental stewardship and sustainable development, aligned with global conservation goals.
