SEP 26:The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, presented the National Geoscience Awards-2024 at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre today, recognizing outstanding contributions in the field of geoscience. The awards celebrate scientists whose work has significantly advanced knowledge, technology, and sustainability in mining, mineral processing, and resource management.

In her address, the President emphasized the fundamental role of minerals in shaping human civilization, citing how the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages were named after key minerals that propelled trade, industry, and societal development. She highlighted that minerals such as iron and coal have been critical in industrialization and continue to drive economic growth and employment generation.

Smt Murmu also underscored the importance of balancing economic gains with environmental responsibility. She urged strict adherence to mining regulations to mitigate adverse impacts like displacement, deforestation, and pollution, and stressed that proper mine closure procedures must safeguard residents and wildlife.

The President further highlighted India’s vast marine mineral reserves and the pivotal role of geoscientists in harnessing these resources sustainably. She called for the development of technologies that extract minerals from the seafloor while minimizing harm to marine biodiversity. Geoscientists were also encouraged to focus on geo-environmental sustainability, technology-driven value addition, and waste reduction in mineral processing.

Smt Murmu noted the strategic significance of Rare Earth Elements (REEs), which underpin modern technology, including smartphones, electric vehicles, defense systems, and clean energy solutions. She emphasized the need for India to achieve self-reliance in REE production through indigenous technology, highlighting its importance for national security and a developed India.

The President appreciated the Ministry of Mines for promoting innovation, AI, machine learning, and drone-based surveys in mining, as well as efforts in recovering valuable elements from mine tailings. She reiterated that sustainable, technologically advanced, and responsible geoscience is essential for national development, economic growth, and global competitiveness.
