Surveyor General of India to Lead Asia-Pacific Geospatial Committee

OCT 16: India, represented by Surveyor General Shri Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana, IAS, has been elected Co-Chair of the Regional Committee of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP) for the 2025–2028 term. The elections were held during the 14th Plenary Meeting of UN-GGIM-AP from 24–26 September 2025 in Goyang-si, Republic of Korea, hosted by the National Geographic Information Institute (NGII).

The committee brings together delegates, technical experts, and observers from 56 member countries to advance geospatial information management across the Asia-Pacific region. India’s election highlights its growing leadership in geospatial innovation, capacity building, and regional collaboration.

Shri Makwana said, “I am honoured by the trust of Asia-Pacific member states. We will work collaboratively to ensure initiatives are inclusive, resilient, and results-driven, aligned with the UN-GGIM Strategic Framework.” He emphasized digital transformation, good governance, data-driven decision-making, and partnerships to strengthen the regional geospatial community.

The election reinforces India’s role in shaping policies and strategies for effective geospatial information management, maximizing social, economic, and environmental benefits, and contributing to global policymaking in geospatial technology.
