MAY 27: In a grand celebration of India’s rich wellness heritage, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, inaugurated the 25-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025 in Puducherry on May 27. The event, held at the scenic Gandhi Thidal on Beach Road, brought together over 6,000 yoga enthusiasts and dignitaries in a vibrant display of unity, health, and spirituality.
Organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) under the Ministry of Ayush, the Yoga Mahotsav saw participation from key leaders including Lieutenant Governor Thiru. K. Kailashnathan and Chief Minister Thiru. N. Rangasamy, highlighting Puducherry’s role as a spiritual and cultural hub. Speaking at the event, Shri Jadhav praised Puducherry as a sacred land that has preserved India’s timeless values, referencing its association with Maharishi Aurobindo. He emphasized yoga’s power to bring peace, balance, and clarity, stating, “Yoga is not just a physical activity but a holistic lifestyle.”
He also credited Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for globalizing yoga and inspiring the 2025 IDY theme: “Yoga for One Earth, One Health”, which aligns with the goal of promoting global health and harmony.
The event featured a live demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol by MDNIY experts, led by Dr. Kashinath Samagandi and Dr. Lakshmi Kandan. Ms. Monalisa Das, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, delivered the welcome address.
Lieutenant Governor Kailashnathan praised yoga as an ancient science fostering mental and physical integration. He highlighted PM Modi’s efforts in getting the UN to recognize June 21 as International Day of Yoga. Chief Minister Rangasamy underscored Puducherry’s spiritual legacy and its ideal environment for promoting inner peace and the core principles of yoga.
Other dignitaries included Assembly Speaker Thiru. Embalam R. Selvam, Public Works Minister Thiru. K. Lakshminarayanan, MPs Thiru. S. Selvaganabathy and Thiru. V. Vaithilingam, among others.
A major highlight was the surge in registrations on the Yoga Sangam portal, which now exceeds 12,000, reflecting the growing public enthusiasm. This event is part of a national lead-up to IDY 2025, featuring 10 signature initiatives such as Yoga Sangam, Yoga Connect, Yoga Maha Kumbh, and Harit Yoga, making it the most expansive edition yet.
