MAY 18: In the lead-up to the 8th anniversary of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), in collaboration with the FIT INDIA Movement, organized a nationwide cyclothon titled “Sundays on Cycle.” The flagship event was held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, with simultaneous participation by over 100 CGST Commissionerates across India.

Flagging off the event in the national capital, Shri Shashank Priya, Member (GST), CBIC, emphasized the revolutionary impact of GST in simplifying the Indian taxation landscape. He noted that GST successfully unified nearly 30 different indirect taxes into a single transparent and efficient tax system, thereby easing compliance for both businesses and citizens.

Shri Priya further highlighted key initiatives introduced to support small taxpayers, including the GST Composition Scheme and the Quarterly Return Monthly Payment (QRMP) Scheme, both aimed at reducing compliance burdens and enhancing the ease of doing business.

The event witnessed overwhelming participation, with more than 50,000 cyclists from across the country joining the campaign. Prominent personalities, including Bollywood actors Suniel Shetty, Milind Soman, and John Abraham, joined the cyclothon in the Mumbai and Pune zones, amplifying its outreach and appeal.

Senior CBIC officials such as Shri Rajesh Sodhi, Principal Chief Commissioner, CGST Delhi Zone; Shri C.P. Goyal, Principal Director General, GST; and Shri Mahesh Kumar Rustagi, Director General of Taxpayer Services, also took part in the event, alongside representatives from various ministries, departments, and members of the public.

To enhance awareness, a GST Help Desk titled “Know About GST” was set up at the venue, where participants could interact with officials and clarify tax-related queries. Additionally, informative brochures, digital kiosks with QR codes for downloading GST materials, and vibrant displays highlighting GST reforms and taxpayer-friendly measures — especially for MSMEs — were made available to participants.

“Sundays on Cycle” represents a unique fusion of fitness promotion and taxpayer engagement. Through this initiative, CBIC continues to strengthen public understanding of GST while advancing India’s national health and governance goals — a fitting celebration of eight years of this landmark tax reform.
