MAY 20: Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, led the Indian delegation at the BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting held in Brasília, Brazil, on 19 May 2025. Hosted under Brazil’s presidency, the meeting brought together energy leaders from BRICS nations to strengthen global energy cooperation with a focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and economic resilience.

During his address, Shri Manohar Lal underscored the growing importance of energy security as a global concern and called for enhanced BRICS cooperation to ensure reliable, equitable access to energy for all. He praised Brazil’s leadership in advancing the theme, “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”

Reaffirming India’s commitment to clean and inclusive energy development, the Minister highlighted several milestones from India’s energy journey. Over the last decade, India has increased its electricity capacity by 90%, now reaching 475 GW, with a target of 900 GW by 2032. The country has become the world’s third-largest producer of solar and wind energy and has made significant strides toward its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

He also shared India’s success in achieving a 20% ethanol blending target and advancing the domestic biofuels sector under the Global Biofuels Alliance. Additional highlights included the deployment of smart grids, advanced metering systems, and a strengthened transmission network through initiatives like the Green Energy Corridor.

India’s bold energy roadmap also includes an ambitious goal of 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 and the expansion of green hydrogen technologies. The launch of a domestic Carbon Credit Market marks a further step toward low-carbon development, with an open invitation to global partners for collaboration.

The Indian Minister also spoke about initiatives aimed at promoting energy efficiency, such as the Energy Conservation Sustainable Buildings Code, rooftop solar expansion, and the adoption of high-efficiency appliances.

In a forward-looking gesture, Shri Manohar Lal extended an invitation to all BRICS nations to participate in a major energy gathering to be hosted by India in 2026. The meeting concluded with a joint call for fair and open international energy markets, enhanced cooperation, and the promotion of local currencies in energy trade.
