MAY 20: In a significant step toward inclusive development and regional empowerment, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has launched the North East Apprenticeship Pilot Scheme in Aizawl, Mizoram. The initiative was jointly unveiled by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Shri Jayant Chaudhary and Mizoram Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma, reflecting the Centre’s continued commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Ashta Lakshmi and Viksit Bharat – Viksit North East.

The scheme aims to provide structured, paid, and industry-aligned apprenticeship opportunities for youth across the North Eastern Region (NER). Over 26,000 apprentices from the region will benefit from an additional ₹1,500 monthly stipend for one year, over and above the standard allowance under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS). The scheme has a total allocation of ₹43.94 crore, which includes funds for outreach, capacity building, and project execution.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Jayant Chaudhary emphasized the pilot’s importance in providing young people with real-world exposure to modern industries and fostering early engagement between employers and future workers. Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma highlighted how the partnership with the Government of India will open new avenues for the region’s youth, blending financial assistance with quality skilling and employment pathways.

The pilot will be implemented by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati, and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), with support from state skill missions and regional directorates. A notable highlight of the event was the MoU between NSDC and Welspun Living Limited, aiming to skill 1,000 youth in the textile sector using a blended learning model. The partnership prioritizes gender inclusion, with at least 50% women participation, and offers guaranteed placement post-training.

The event also featured a presentation on the new National Scheme for ITI Upgradation, a ₹60,000 crore initiative to modernize 1,000 ITIs nationwide. This effort is expected to further enhance skilling infrastructure in the North East.

With participation from key dignitaries and stakeholders, the pilot marks a crucial milestone in building a future-ready, skilled workforce, positioning the North East as a leader in India’s skills-driven transformation.
