JUNE 06: World Environment Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm across Jammu and Kashmir, with various government departments, educational institutions, and social organizations organizing a multitude of activities aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainability.
In Jammu, the Road Transport Corporation Complex hosted a function where Satish Sharma, Minister for Food, Information Technology, Transport, Youth Services, and Sports, addressed the gathering. He emphasized the necessity of environmental preservation for the survival of the human race and the importance of balancing conservation with sustainable development. The event featured a tree plantation drive and concluded with a pledge by attendees to adopt environmentally responsible behaviors in both personal and professional spheres.
The Jammu & Kashmir Pollution Control Committee (J&KPCC), under the guidance of Chairman Vasu Yadav, launched a pre-campaign focusing on the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.” The campaign included clean-up drives, workshops, webinars, and plantation drives across all districts of the Union Territory. In Jammu, a clean-up drive was conducted along the River Tawi, led by Ghansham Singh, Member Secretary of J&KPCC. Subsequently, officials from J&KPCC, J&K Forest Development Corporation, and the Department of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing took a collective pledge at Parivesh Bhawan in Narwal to maintain a clean and green environment.
In Srinagar, an awareness rally organized by J&KPCC saw the participation of over 100 students from various schools. The rally commenced from the J&KPCC office in Rajbagh and culminated at Zero Bridge, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation.
Educational institutions also played a pivotal role in the celebrations. The Department of Botany at the University of Jammu, in collaboration with the Department of Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing, celebrated World Environment Day with the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.” The event featured the planting of a Red Sandalwood tree and an exhibition showcasing crafts made from waste materials, emphasizing the significance of recycling and sustainable practices.
