JUNE 07: Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, today departed for Nice, France, to lead a high-level Indian delegation at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), scheduled from June 8 to 13, 2025. His participation underscores India’s growing commitment to global marine governance and ocean sustainability under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, the conference is a key platform for world leaders, scientists, and civil society actors to discuss urgent marine challenges and chart sustainable ocean strategies. The conference aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), aiming to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas, and marine resources.

Over the next six days, Dr. Singh will represent India in plenary sessions, deliver India’s national statement, and participate in bilateral meetings with countries such as France, Germany, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Chile. These dialogues will focus on collaborative efforts in tackling marine pollution, enhancing coastal resilience, advancing ocean science, and unlocking blue economy opportunities.

A major highlight will be the India–Norway side event on Marine Spatial Planning, taking place aboard the Norwegian research vessel S/S Statsraad Lehmkuhl at Monaco Harbour on June 8. The event, co-hosted with Norway’s Minister of International Development Åsmund Grøver Aukrust, will be graced by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway.

India’s involvement also includes active participation in Ocean Action Panels on themes like marine pollution, restoration of marine ecosystems, and scientific cooperation. Ahead of the conference, the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) organized two “Blue Talks” in collaboration with the embassies of France and Costa Rica to share ideas and build momentum for UNOC3.

Dr. Jitendra Singh is expected to highlight India’s key marine initiatives, including deep-sea exploration, coastal protection efforts, and regional cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. His address will reinforce India’s stand on promoting sustainable ocean governance, while ensuring equity, scientific collaboration, and inclusive blue growth.

This visit positions India as a proactive contributor to global ocean policy, and a responsible stakeholder in securing the health of the planet’s oceans for future generations.
