JUNE 20: In a focused effort to assess and improve the welfare of tribal students in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Javed Rana, visited the Gujjar-Bakerwal Hostel in Baramulla. Accompanied by local legislators and officials, the minister interacted with students and reviewed the hostel’s infrastructure and management.
During the visit, Minister Rana held direct conversations with students to understand their experiences, challenges, and day-to-day needs. The students shared feedback on issues such as accommodation, study environment, sanitation, and access to basic facilities. The interaction reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring that tribal youth not only receive quality education but also reside in dignified and supportive living conditions.
The minister took a detailed round of the hostel premises, inspecting dormitories, kitchen facilities, washrooms, study areas, and recreational zones. Based on his observations and student input, Minister Rana issued on-the-spot instructions to the Director of Tribal Affairs to immediately address the shortcomings in hostel management. He directed the department to take urgent measures to plug gaps in service delivery and ensure that the welfare of tribal students remains a top priority.
He also emphasized the need for regular monitoring, improved supervision, and timely maintenance of hostel facilities. Highlighting the importance of education in empowering marginalized communities, the minister reiterated that hostels must function not just as shelters but as enablers of academic and personal growth.
Local legislators who accompanied the minister supported the move and pledged cooperation in implementing improvements. They also acknowledged the importance of creating a positive environment that can nurture the aspirations of tribal youth and help them achieve academic success.
