JUNE 20: In a significant step toward ensuring access to safe drinking water in Jammu and Kashmir, Jal Shakti Minister Javed Rana inaugurated three vital Water Supply Schemes in Baramulla district under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The schemes—Khadniyar, Kansipora, and Kitchamain—aim to transform the water supply infrastructure and directly benefit over 13,381 residents by providing more than 2,000 household tap connections.

The inauguration ceremony was marked by strong local participation, with community members expressing gratitude for the timely delivery of a basic but critical necessity. These water supply projects are designed to ensure reliable and clean drinking water, improving public health and reducing the burden on women and children who often bear the responsibility of fetching water.

Minister Javed Rana emphasized that access to clean drinking water is not just a necessity but a fundamental right. He lauded the efforts of the engineering teams and ground-level staff who worked tirelessly to complete the projects within the stipulated time frame. He also noted that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for every citizen, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The schemes, built under the ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission, are part of a broader national agenda to provide functional household tap connections (FHTCs) to every rural home in India. With the addition of these three schemes, Baramulla district has taken a substantial step forward in achieving universal coverage.

Minister Rana reaffirmed that the government, under the leadership of Omar Abdullah, places high priority on basic amenities like water, sanitation, and healthcare. These developments are integral to building resilient communities and supporting sustainable development across the Union Territory.

The successful commissioning of these schemes is not only a technical achievement but also a social milestone, improving hygiene, reducing water-borne diseases, and enhancing the dignity of rural families.
