JUNE 23: In a strong push for environmental conservation, Minister Satish Sharma inaugurated a large-scale plantation drive in Hiranagar, calling for collective efforts to restore ecological balance and fight climate change. The event witnessed active participation from MLA Hiranagar, local officials, youth groups, and environmental activists, reflecting a growing community resolve to protect nature.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Sharma emphasized that afforestation is essential not only to reverse deforestation but also to address broader concerns like water scarcity, soil degradation, and global warming. “The environment is our shared responsibility, and through community-led plantation drives, we can make a tangible impact,” he said.
The Minister highlighted the government’s consistent commitment to green initiatives, especially those involving youth. “Our focus is on empowering young citizens through programs run by Youth Services & Sports, eco-clubs, and regular nature camps. The goal is to connect the next generation with nature while instilling a sense of environmental stewardship,” he added.
Hundreds of saplings were planted across designated areas of Hiranagar during the drive. Officials from the Forest Department coordinated with local volunteers and school eco-clubs to ensure organized and sustained planting activity. The Minister personally joined in the plantation activity, encouraging students and volunteers to take ownership of the green spaces they help create.
Addressing concerns about climate instability and shrinking green cover, Sharma urged for regular and decentralized plantation drives across Jammu & Kashmir. He appealed to educational institutions, panchayats, and civil society groups to collaborate on region-specific environmental initiatives.
The event also featured brief educational sessions for youth on the role of trees in water conservation, carbon absorption, and biodiversity protection. Environmentalists praised the initiative and called for follow-up mechanisms to ensure plant survival and maintenance.
In closing remarks, Minister Sharma reaffirmed that environmental protection remains a core policy focus, not just a symbolic gesture. “Every tree planted today is a promise to the future,” he noted.
