JUNE 28: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the urgent need for a collaborative effort to reinstate Jammu and Kashmir as one of India’s premier tourist destinations. Addressing stakeholders at FICCI’s ‘Tourism Revival Dialogue’ held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, the Chief Minister outlined a vision focused on enhancing the overall tourism experience and reinforcing the region’s tourism infrastructure.
He highlighted the state government’s commitment to developing a more resilient and sustainable tourism model. A key initiative under this vision is Project SPREAD, which aims to identify and establish nine new tourist destinations across both Jammu and Kashmir regions. These upcoming spots are expected to diversify the tourism offerings and help decongest traditional tourist areas.
Speaking to a wide spectrum of tourism professionals, industry leaders, and policy-makers, Abdullah stressed that the revival of the tourism sector cannot be the sole responsibility of the government. He urged all stakeholders—including private operators, hoteliers, transporters, and local communities—to actively participate, share constructive feedback, and collectively shape the future of tourism in the Union Territory.
The Chief Minister also spotlighted the immense untapped potential of Jammu and Kashmir’s diverse landscapes, heritage, and cultural richness. He pointed to niche tourism segments such as MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), golf tourism, and destination weddings as areas with strong growth prospects. These sectors, he said, can significantly boost high-value tourism and bring international attention to the region.
Improving infrastructure and connectivity, including air, rail, and road links, was identified as another key priority to ensure ease of travel and better accessibility for tourists.
Concluding his address, Omar Abdullah called on the tourism fraternity to stay deeply involved and proactive. “We need consistent collaboration and innovation to make Jammu and Kashmir a vibrant, inclusive, and world-class tourist hub once again,” he said, emphasizing that the success of the region’s tourism revival lies in shared responsibility and continuous engagement.
