JULY 05: In a major move to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a power-surplus region, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a high-level meeting focused on expediting hydropower development across the Union Territory. The meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to energy security, sustainable growth, and the socio-economic empowerment of local communities.

With an estimated hydropower potential of 18,000 MW, Jammu and Kashmir remains one of India’s most resource-rich regions in terms of renewable energy. So far, 3,540.15 MW has been harnessed, while an impressive 7,768 MW is currently in the pipeline. The administration is determined to tap this potential through strategic planning, timely execution, and inclusive development.

Chief Secretary Dulloo emphasized the need for the timely completion of ongoing and upcoming hydropower projects. Departments were instructed to streamline clearances and address implementation bottlenecks swiftly to ensure projects meet their timelines.

The meeting also focused on key areas such as community-centered rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) policies. The government aims to incorporate skill-based R&R programs to provide affected communities with sustainable livelihoods and training opportunities. Additionally, Local Area Development (LAD) works will be undertaken to ensure the benefits of power projects directly reach neighboring populations.

Apart from hydropower, the administration is also advancing solar energy initiatives. Solar power projects at Pampore and Jehlum have been highlighted as priority developments, signaling a balanced approach between hydropower and solar technologies.

This integrated clean energy push aligns with the larger vision of making Jammu and Kashmir not only energy self-sufficient but also a leader in green energy within the region. The efforts are expected to boost the local economy, generate employment, and support the UT’s climate goals.

With firm administrative backing and a structured roadmap, J&K is positioning itself as a hub of renewable energy and sustainable growth in northern India. The accelerated pace of hydropower and solar development is a decisive step towards a more empowered, environmentally conscious future for the region.
