JULY 23: The Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Disaster Management Authority (JKUTDMA) has issued a flash flood advisory for several districts due to the likelihood of heavy to moderate rainfall in the coming hours. As per the advisory, there is a low to moderate risk of flash floods in the districts of Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Reasi, Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, Baramulla, and Anantnag.
The warning highlights the possibility of surface runoff and waterlogging in low-lying and vulnerable areas, which may lead to traffic disruptions and challenges for local residents. Authorities have advised people, especially those living near riverbanks, streams, and hilly regions, to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
The advisory states that heavy rainfall in these districts could cause sudden surges in water levels, increasing the risk of landslides and flash floods, particularly in hilly and mountainous terrains. Commuters have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable zones and exercise caution while crossing waterlogged roads or bridges.
Disaster management teams and local administration have been instructed to stay on high alert, with emergency response units ready to act if required. Residents have been advised to stay informed through official weather updates and avoid spreading rumors or unverified information.
JKUTDMA has also urged people to keep essential emergency items handy, remain indoors during intense rainfall, and ensure the safety of livestock and valuables in areas prone to flooding. In case of emergencies, locals are encouraged to contact the nearest control room or helpline numbers provided by the district administration.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecasted a spell of intense showers across parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 to 48 hours, which could further increase the risk of flash floods and localized landslides in sensitive areas.
The administration is continuously monitoring the situation, and people are requested to follow the guidelines issued by disaster management authorities to minimize risks.
