July 27 – With the historic launch of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla railway line, Jammu and Kashmir has entered a transformative phase in railway infrastructure. The region is now witnessing rapid modernization of both railway tracks and passenger coaches, promising faster, safer, and more comfortable journeys for locals and tourists alike.
High-Tech Track Maintenance Now a Reality in the Valley
Before this rail link, track upkeep in the Kashmir Valley was a mostly manual and time-consuming process. Now, thanks to direct rail access, the valley is seeing a shift to machine-assisted maintenance, ensuring stronger and smoother rail lines.
Here’s what’s new:
-
A Tamping Machine has been actively working since June, compacting stone under the tracks to keep them firm and well-aligned. So far, it has covered nearly 88 km, improving travel comfort.
-
Four Ballast Cleaning Machines (BCMs) are clearing old stone layers under the tracks, replacing them with fresh ballast to improve safety. Together, they’ve cleaned more than 14 km of track.
-
A total of 17 ballast rakes have been delivered to the region, helping reinforce and level the track beds.
-
High-tech inspection tools like the Track Recording Car (TRC) and Oscillation Monitoring System (OMS) have surveyed the tracks and flagged weak spots for improvement.
All of this has led to dramatically better track quality – cutting down vibration, improving ride stability, and reducing wear on trains.
Artificial Intelligence to Boost Safety & Ease Workload
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a strategic push to digitize and modernize how track inspections are done. Going forward, AI-based systems will help:
-
Detect hidden cracks and structural issues early
-
Reduce manual labor risks for track workers
-
Use technologies like ultrasound, sensor-based diagnostics, and automated measurement tools for 24/7 monitoring
This will not only prevent accidents but also create a more scientific and stress-free work environment for railway staff.
First-Ever Full Coach Upgrades in Kashmir Valley
With the valley now connected to the main rail network, Indian Railways is undertaking a massive revamp of its local train coaches—especially the DEMU and MEMU rakes, which are used for short-distance passenger services.
Until recently, these coaches couldn’t be sent to workshops for proper overhauls. They had to be transported by road—an expensive and inefficient process. Now, coaches are being moved directly via rail to Lucknow and Jalandhar for full modernization.
Key upgrades include:
-
Fresh exterior painting with anti-graffiti coating
-
Bio-toilets, upgraded wash systems, and new water pumps
-
Refurbished seating, new standing handles, and durable PVC flooring
-
Improved lighting, modular charging points, and automatic power backup systems
-
Better passenger announcement systems and window repairs for better ventilation
By August 31, 2025, every rake operating in the Kashmir valley will be fully overhauled and returned to service.
India’s Railway Growth Reflected in J&K
This development in Jammu & Kashmir is part of a nationwide railway modernization push. Since 2014, the total rail track network in India has grown from 79,000 km to over 1 lakh km. Over 78% of these tracks are now capable of speeds of 110 km/h or higher—almost double the percentage from a decade ago.
In Summary:
-
The Kashmir Valley now benefits from machine-driven rail maintenance, improving travel safety and ride comfort.
-
Indian Railways is introducing AI for smarter defect detection, ensuring faster response and better worker safety.
-
Coach overhaul projects are in full swing, bringing modern facilities to local trains for the first time ever.
-
All upgrades are expected to finish by August 2025, creating a strong, modern, and connected railway system in Jammu & Kashmir.
