JULY 31: Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani, Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), superannuated today, bringing to a close a stellar military career that spanned 39 years. Known for his visionary leadership and commitment to national security, the General Officer relinquished his post as VCOAS on July 31, 2025.
Commissioned into The Garhwal Rifles in December 1985 after graduating from the National Defence Academy, Lt Gen Subramani rose through the ranks due to his exemplary service, professional excellence, and dedication to the Indian Army. An officer of exceptional academic achievement, he holds a Master of Arts degree from King’s College, London, and an M.Phil. in Defence Studies from the University of Madras.
Throughout his career, Lt Gen Subramani held a wide array of command, staff, and instructional appointments across some of the most challenging operational environments. His deep expertise in strategic and tactical operations, particularly in high-sensitivity areas along the Western and Northern borders, played a key role in enhancing India’s operational readiness.
His service has been recognized at the highest levels. For his distinguished contributions, Lt Gen Subramani was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM)—a testament to his dedication and operational excellence.
Under his stewardship, the Army witnessed advancements in both strategic planning and operational execution. Known for his ability to adapt to evolving threats and for mentoring the next generation of military leaders, he leaves behind a legacy of professionalism and patriotism.
