AUG 01: Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, AVSM, NM, today assumed charge as the 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS). Upon assuming his new role, the senior officer paid solemn tribute to fallen heroes by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.
An alumnus of the 71st course of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988. Over the last 36 years, he has distinguished himself as a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, holding several crucial operational, command, and staff positions.
His seagoing tenure includes service on frontline warships like INS Mysore and INS Nishank. He commanded key vessels including INS Vibhuti, INS Nashak, INS Kuthar, and the guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri. Notably, he was Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet during a high-activity period following the Galwan clashes in 2020.
In staff roles, he has served in capacities like Director Naval Plans and Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans). Promoted to Flag Rank in 2018, he later served as Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, enhancing operational readiness and infrastructure.
Before assuming his current post, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was the Deputy Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (DCIDS) for both Operations and Policy, where he significantly contributed to jointness, indigenisation, and strategic planning across the Services.
For his exemplary service, he was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2021.
Vice Admiral Vatsayan is married to Sarita and they have two children—one an ISB MBA graduate and the other a humanities graduate.
His appointment marks a continuation of strong leadership within the Navy at a time of increasing maritime challenges and strategic reorientation.
