AUG 08: Union Power Minister Shri Manohar Lal Khattar and Minister of State for Atomic Energy Dr. Jitendra Singh convened a high-level meeting today at Parliament House, New Delhi, to review progress and set direction for India’s ambitious 100 GW Nuclear Energy Mission.
This initiative follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of expanding the nation’s clean energy portfolio and achieving Net Zero emissions. The roadmap reviewed at the meeting includes increasing nuclear power capacity from 8.8 GW to 22 GW by 2032, with an additional 14 GW to come from current and upcoming projects.
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized a historic policy shift — opening the nuclear sector for private participation — to enhance energy security and accelerate capacity building. He highlighted the positive response from industries to the Bharat Small Modular Reactor (SMR) program, prompting an extension of the RFP submission deadline to 30th September 2025.
The ministers directed urgent reforms, including streamlining regulatory approvals, standardizing documentation, synchronizing licensing processes, and prioritizing technical upgradation. They also called for greater capacity-building efforts and private sector awareness campaigns to encourage participation.
Dr. Singh reaffirmed the government’s support to private players, many of whom were “pleasantly surprised” at the nuclear sector’s opening. Shri Khattar stressed strict adherence to project timelines to meet energy goals.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy; Shri Pankaj Agrawal, Secretary, Power; Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC; and Shri Bhuwan Chandra Pathak, CMD, NPCIL, among others.
This meeting marks a major step toward realizing India’s clean energy future through nuclear innovation and public-private collaboration.
