AUG 21: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Shishir Gupta, today chaired a review meeting at the Mini-Secretariat, Shopian to assess the district’s progress in combating tuberculosis (TB) and to chalk out a comprehensive roadmap for achieving TB-free status in line with national and state health targets.

The meeting brought together senior health officials, district officers, and representatives of allied departments who shared updates on TB detection, treatment adherence, community awareness drives, and nutritional support being extended to affected individuals.

During the deliberations, the DC stressed the importance of early detection, timely treatment, and community-level engagement as the key pillars of TB elimination. He urged health workers to intensify field-level activities, ensure regular door-to-door screenings, and strengthen coordination with Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) for effective outreach.

Shishir Gupta also reviewed the progress under the Nikshay Mitra initiative, which provides nutritional and social support to TB patients, and called for greater involvement of civil society, volunteers, and NGOs to complement government efforts. He further directed the health department to track every patient through the Nikshay portal and ensure zero dropouts in treatment.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to a “TB-Mukt Bharat” by 2025, the DC said that Shopian district must align its efforts with this vision by mobilizing resources, intensifying awareness campaigns, and working collectively to remove social stigma around the disease.

Officials informed the chair about the district’s TB burden, patient recovery rates, and ongoing IEC (Information, Education & Communication) activities. The DC appreciated the progress made so far but emphasized the need for sustained momentum to achieve the TB-free milestone within the set timeframe.

The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge from the district administration, health workers, and stakeholders to strengthen their fight against tuberculosis and make Shopian one of the leading districts in TB elimination efforts in Jammu and Kashmir.
