SEP 07: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today visited several flood-affected areas in Anantnag district to assess the ground situation and extend support to the affected families. During his visit, the Chief Minister interacted with residents impacted by the recent floods, assuring them that the government would provide timely relief and ensure proper rehabilitation measures are put in place.
He issued clear instructions to the district administration to accelerate efforts to restore essential services, including electricity, drinking water, and road connectivity. CM Abdullah also directed officials to reinforce river embankments and ensure that adequate facilities are available in shelter homes housing displaced families.
To ensure that the affected receive compensation without delay, the Chief Minister called for the formation of special damage assessment teams. These teams will evaluate the destruction caused to infrastructure, homes, agriculture, horticulture, and stranded transport, and will prepare detailed proposals to be submitted to the Government of India for financial assistance.
Highlighting the importance of long-term preventive strategies, Omar Abdullah stressed the urgent need for comprehensive flood management. He emphasized the dredging of rivers and streams, creation of an effective flood channel system, installation of dewatering pumps, and enhancement of flood protection infrastructure across vulnerable areas.
He noted that while immediate relief is crucial, sustainable solutions are equally important to prevent such disasters from recurring in the future. The Chief Minister assured residents that the state government is committed to both short-term relief and long-term mitigation efforts, and urged officials to maintain transparency and efficiency in all relief-related operations.
The visit reflects the administration’s proactive approach toward managing natural disasters and ensuring the safety and welfare of its citizens in times of crisis.
