SEP 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Darrang, Assam, laid the foundation stone and inaugurated development projects worth around ₹6,500 crore. Addressing a public gathering, PM Modi emphasized Assam’s rapid growth, highlighting its near 13% growth rate and emergence as one of India’s fastest-growing states.

Key projects launched include the Darrang Medical College & Hospital, Guwahati Ring Road, and the Kuruwa–Narengi Bridge over the Brahmaputra River. The PM said these projects would enhance healthcare, connectivity, and economic opportunities in the region. Once completed, the new bridge will reduce travel time between Guwahati and Darrang to minutes.

PM Modi reiterated his vision of making Assam a key engine in India’s development. He stressed that the next phase of the 21st century belongs to Eastern and North Eastern India, which had long been neglected. He also announced major GST reforms to be rolled out during Navratri, reducing taxes on items like cement, medicines, and insurance.

The Prime Minister launched a nationwide “Demography Mission” to counter infiltration in border regions, calling it a threat to national security. He accused the opposition of encouraging illegal settlements and emphasized reclaiming encroached lands in Assam. Notably, the reclaimed Gorukhuti land is now part of an agricultural revival project.

Healthcare expansion was another major focus, with Modi noting that Assam now has 24 medical colleges—up from just six before 2014. He announced a plan to add one lakh new medical seats nationwide in the next five years.

PM Modi called for buying “Made in India” products during the festive season, urging citizens to support local economies.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were present at the event.
