SEP 17: The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), functioning as the National Coordination Centre for the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (NCC-PvPI), inaugurated the 5th National Pharmacovigilance Week (NPW) at Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre, New Delhi. The week, observed from 17th to 23rd September 2025, carries the theme “Your Safety, Just a Click Away: Report to PvPI”, aimed at encouraging healthcare professionals, researchers, and patients to actively report adverse drug reactions (ADRs) using simplified digital platforms.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), underlined the growing importance of pharmacovigilance in safeguarding public health. He noted that India now ranks among the top global contributors in ADR reporting. He highlighted the need for greater patient participation, stating that true impact can only be achieved when patients, in addition to healthcare professionals, report adverse events directly.

Dr. Raghuvanshi stressed that pharmacovigilance must evolve with changing healthcare contexts, calling for a culture of curiosity, innovation, and smart integration of technology to improve patient safety outcomes. He praised the progress made in bringing IPC and IP to the forefront of India’s healthcare agenda.

As part of the observance, IPC launched new initiatives, including a short film on PvPI, a comic series in vernacular languages to promote awareness, and a QR code-enabled online reporting platform for easy access. Awards were also presented to recognize outstanding contributions: the PvPI – Patient Safety Excellence Award to the ADR Monitoring Centre at Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Cancer Centre, Varanasi, and the PvPI – Patient Connect Award to Mr. Delli Kumar T. of Andhra Pradesh, acknowledging the vital role of patients in ADR reporting.

The event was attended by leading experts including Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Prof. Y.K. Gupta, Dr. Nilima Kshirsagar, and Dr. Jai Prakash, reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening pharmacovigilance for safer healthcare.
