NOV 30:Minister Sakeena Itoo laid the foundation stones for a series of important flood mitigation projects across Kulgam, marking a significant step in the Government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard communities living in flood-prone areas. The new initiatives, collectively valued at ₹1.50 crore, are designed to protect vulnerable habitations and vital infrastructure located along the Veshow Nallah and Nallah Gujerpora—two water bodies that have historically posed serious risks during seasonal flooding.

During the launch, Minister Itoo emphasized the Government’s commitment to enhancing disaster resilience across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in regions that face recurring threats of water overflow and soil erosion. She noted that these projects will not only provide immediate protection but also contribute to durable infrastructure strengthening in the long term.

The planned works include reinforcement of embankments at critical points, improved channelization to ensure smoother water flow, and strategic interventions aimed at reducing the impact of heavy rains and flash floods. Such measures are expected to help minimize flooding incidents, protect agricultural fields, prevent damage to residential areas, and reduce the burden on local communities that frequently experience disruptions during monsoon periods.

Itoo highlighted that climate change and unpredictable weather patterns have made it essential to adopt proactive, scientifically informed solutions. By investing in flood management and disaster preparedness, the Government aims to build stronger and safer settlements equipped to handle natural hazards more effectively.

She appreciated the efforts of the district administration, engineers, and local bodies for working collectively to plan and execute these initiatives. Community participation, she stressed, will remain vital to maintaining the newly developed structures and ensuring their long-term effectiveness.

The Minister reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to continue prioritizing public welfare through sustainable infrastructure projects, disaster management initiatives, and protective measures that support the safety and economic stability of the people of Kulgam.
