Feb 20: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced in the Legislative Assembly that all currently closed tourist destinations in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to reopen by May this year.

Winding up the discussion on Demands for Grants, the Chief Minister informed the House that the government is simultaneously working on plans to introduce nine new tourist destinations to further strengthen and diversify the tourism industry in the Union Territory.

Tourism Revival After Pahalgam Attack

Mr. Abdullah said his government adopted a “step-by-step” approach to revive tourism in the aftermath of the April 22, 2025, terror attack in Pahalgam. The incident had dealt a severe blow to the tourism sector, with many stakeholders fearing that visitors might not return to the region for years.

However, the Chief Minister stated that sustained efforts by the government, improved security measures, and coordinated promotional campaigns helped restore confidence among travellers. He acknowledged that the tourism industry faced a challenging period but emphasised that resilience and careful planning were key to its gradual recovery.

All Destinations to Be Operational by May

According to the Chief Minister, all tourist spots that were temporarily closed for security or logistical reasons are now on track to reopen by May. The move is expected to provide a significant boost ahead of the peak summer tourist season.

Tourism remains one of the primary drivers of Jammu & Kashmir’s economy, supporting thousands of families directly and indirectly through hospitality, transport, handicrafts, and allied services.

The reopening of destinations is likely to generate renewed economic activity, especially in popular tourist circuits such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam.

Nine New Tourist Destinations Planned

In a forward-looking strategy, the Chief Minister revealed that the government is working on plans to introduce nine new tourist destinations across the Union Territory. The objective is to reduce pressure on existing hotspots while promoting lesser-known areas with untapped potential.

Diversifying tourism offerings will help distribute visitor flow more evenly and encourage sustainable development. The new destinations are expected to focus on eco-tourism, adventure tourism and cultural experiences, thereby broadening the appeal of Jammu & Kashmir to domestic and international travellers.

Addressing Infrastructure Gaps

Mr. Abdullah also acknowledged that certain gaps remain in tourist infrastructure at established destinations. He assured the Assembly that the government is committed to addressing these shortcomings in key locations such as Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg.

He noted that several infrastructure projects are nearing completion, including the development of Jammu Lake and the Jammu Riverfront. These projects aim to enhance urban tourism infrastructure and create new recreational spaces for both residents and visitors.

Improving facilities such as accommodation, transport connectivity, sanitation, and public amenities remains central to the government’s tourism strategy.

Focus on Sustainable Growth

The Chief Minister’s announcement signals a broader push to reposition Jammu & Kashmir as a year-round tourism destination. Beyond traditional sightseeing, the government is exploring opportunities in adventure sports, pilgrimage tourism, cultural festivals and heritage tourism.

Officials believe that structured development of new destinations, combined with upgraded infrastructure in existing hubs, will ensure long-term sustainability of the tourism sector.

The Assembly discussion highlighted the sector’s critical role in employment generation and economic stability in the Union Territory. By reopening closed destinations and adding new attractions, the government aims to create a more resilient and diversified tourism ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

As the summer season approaches, stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality industry have welcomed the announcement. The reopening of tourist destinations by May is expected to restore business momentum and reinforce Jammu & Kashmir’s image as a premier travel destination.

With plans for nine new tourist spots and infrastructure upgrades underway, the Union Territory appears poised for a renewed phase of tourism growth.
