A one-day technical discussion on the conservation of the Mansar–Surinsar lake ecosystem was held at Mansar Lake, bringing together policymakers, environmental experts, and stakeholders to address ecological challenges and preservation strategies.
The meeting focused on maintaining the ecological balance of both Mansar Lake and Surinsar Lake, which are known for their rich biodiversity and importance as wetland habitats.
The session was attended by Sheetal Nanda, Commissioner/Secretary of the Forest, Ecology & Environment Department, and Sarvesh Rai, along with experts, officials, and representatives from various departments.
During the deliberations, participants highlighted the urgent need for sustainable conservation practices to protect the fragile lake ecosystem. Emphasis was laid on scientific monitoring of water quality, preservation of aquatic life, and safeguarding habitats for migratory birds that visit the region seasonally.
Experts also underlined the importance of involving local communities in conservation efforts, noting that public awareness and participation play a crucial role in long-term environmental sustainability. They stressed that coordinated action between government agencies and residents can significantly improve outcomes.
The Mansar–Surinsar lake system is not only ecologically significant but also holds cultural and tourism value, attracting visitors throughout the year. However, increasing human activity and environmental pressures have raised concerns about its long-term health.
Officials reiterated their commitment to implementing effective conservation measures, including regular monitoring, habitat restoration, and awareness campaigns. The need for integrated planning and policy support was also discussed to ensure balanced development without compromising the ecosystem.
The discussion concluded with a collective resolve to strengthen conservation initiatives and protect the lakes as vital natural assets for future generations.
