April 18, 2026:
India
has officially confirmed receiving an invitation to participate in a maritime security initiative led by the United Kingdom and France aimed at safeguarding transit through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The development was confirmed by Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, during a weekly media briefing in the national capital. He stated that New Delhi has been approached to contribute to a coordinated international effort focused on ensuring “uninterrupted navigation” through the crucial maritime corridor.

The Strait of Hormuz is widely regarded as one of the most important energy routes in the world, facilitating nearly 20 percent of global oil trade. Any disruption in the passage has far-reaching implications for global energy markets and economic stability, making its security a top priority for many nations.

The invitation comes at a time when the international community is intensifying diplomatic and strategic efforts to maintain stability in the region. The proposed initiative is expected to involve collaboration among multiple countries to monitor and secure shipping routes, ensuring the safe movement of commercial vessels.

In a parallel diplomatic effort, Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron recently held discussions at the Élysée Palace. The two leaders are preparing to host a virtual summit involving around 40 countries to deliberate on the evolving situation in the Strait.

Friedrich Merz is also expected to participate in the discussions and has indicated interest in involving Donald Trump in the broader dialogue process.

Officials believe that India’s potential participation in the initiative would be significant, given its strategic interests in energy security and maritime trade. As a major importer of crude oil, India has a direct stake in ensuring that key shipping routes remain open and secure.

While no final decision has been announced, sources indicate that New Delhi is carefully evaluating the proposal in line with its strategic priorities and international commitments.
