April 18, 2026:
World Heritage Day, also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites, is being observed across the globe today to raise awareness about the importance of preserving cultural and natural heritage.
Celebrated annually on April 18, the day highlights the diversity and vulnerability of heritage sites while encouraging collective efforts for their protection and conservation. The observance was established by UNESCO following a proposal by the International Council on Monuments and Sites.
This year’s theme, “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters,” emphasizes the need to safeguard cultural heritage during crises such as wars, natural disasters, and other emergencies. It calls for strengthening resilience and ensuring that both tangible and intangible heritage are protected in challenging situations.
Across countries, various activities are being organised to mark the occasion. These include heritage walks, guided tours to monuments, seminars, educational programmes, and photo exhibitions aimed at spreading awareness among people, especially the younger generation.
In India, the day holds special significance given the nation’s rich cultural legacy, diverse traditions, and iconic architectural landmarks. From ancient temples and forts to historic cities, India’s heritage reflects centuries of history and civilization.
Om Birla extended his greetings to citizens on the occasion. In a message shared on social media, he highlighted that India has always been home to invaluable historical treasures and cultural diversity that showcase its glorious traditions. He urged people to take pride in the country’s heritage and contribute towards its preservation.
Experts have stressed that rapid urbanisation, climate change, and human activities pose growing threats to heritage sites worldwide. They emphasize the importance of community participation, sustainable tourism, and policy support to ensure long-term conservation.
World Heritage Day serves as a reminder that preserving the past is essential for building a sustainable future. By protecting monuments, traditions, and cultural expressions, societies can safeguard their identity and pass on their legacy to future generations.
