13 May: Air India has announced the rationalisation of its international flight network till August in response to ongoing airspace restrictions, higher fuel expenses, and operational challenges affecting global aviation routes.
The airline said the temporary adjustments are aimed at maintaining operational stability, improving schedule reliability, and reducing disruptions for passengers during a period of rising aviation costs and restricted flight corridors.
Officials stated that several international routes have been revised due to airspace curbs impacting flight durations and fuel consumption. Extended flying times on certain sectors have increased operational expenses, particularly as global fuel prices continue to remain volatile.
Air India noted that the changes are part of a broader network management strategy designed to optimise aircraft utilisation and maintain efficiency across international operations.
Industry experts explained that restrictions in international airspace often force airlines to take longer alternative routes, resulting in higher fuel burn, increased operational costs, and scheduling complexities. Airlines worldwide have been facing similar challenges due to geopolitical tensions and changing aviation conditions in various regions.
The airline clarified that passenger convenience and safety remain the top priorities while implementing the revised schedules. Customers affected by route adjustments or schedule changes are expected to receive updates regarding rebooking options and travel arrangements.
Aviation analysts believe the decision reflects the growing pressure on airlines globally as they deal with fluctuating fuel prices, operational costs, and uncertain international aviation conditions.
Higher aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs continue to impact airline profitability, especially for long-haul international services where fuel expenses form a major portion of operational expenditure.
Experts also noted that network rationalisation is a common industry practice during periods of economic uncertainty or operational disruptions, allowing airlines to maintain service quality while managing financial pressures more effectively.
Air India has been undergoing significant expansion and modernisation efforts in recent years, including fleet upgrades, improved passenger services, and network restructuring aimed at strengthening its global presence.
The temporary adjustments till August are expected to help the airline streamline operations while responding to evolving international aviation conditions.
Passengers have been advised to regularly check flight schedules and official airline updates before planning international travel.
