13 May: The Union Cabinet has approved Indian Railways’ first semi high-speed rail project connecting Ahmedabad and Dholera, marking a significant step toward modernising rail infrastructure and improving regional connectivity.

The project is expected to enhance transportation facilities between Ahmedabad and the upcoming Dholera Special Investment Region, which is being developed as a major industrial and smart city hub in Gujarat.

Officials stated that the semi high-speed corridor will support faster passenger movement, reduce travel time, and strengthen connectivity to industrial and economic zones in the region.

The rail project is part of broader efforts by the government to modernise Indian Railways through advanced infrastructure, faster trains, and improved connectivity networks. Authorities believe the corridor will play an important role in supporting industrial growth, urban development, and economic activity in Gujarat.

According to officials, the project will feature upgraded rail systems and modern infrastructure designed to support semi high-speed train operations. The corridor is also expected to improve convenience for daily commuters, business travellers, and future industrial workforce movement.

Experts noted that improved railway connectivity to Dholera could accelerate investment and development in the region, especially as the area is emerging as a major industrial and manufacturing destination.

The government has been focusing heavily on railway modernisation in recent years through electrification, dedicated freight corridors, station redevelopment, and high-speed rail initiatives.

Industry observers said the Ahmedabad-Dholera project could become a model for future semi high-speed rail corridors across India aimed at balancing speed, efficiency, and affordability.

Officials added that enhanced transport infrastructure is critical for supporting India’s growing economy and improving connectivity between urban centres and industrial zones.

The Cabinet approval also reflects the government’s emphasis on infrastructure-led growth and long-term investments in transportation networks to support trade, manufacturing, and regional development.

The project is expected to generate employment opportunities during both construction and operational phases while contributing to economic activity in the state.

With the approval of the Ahmedabad-Dholera corridor, Indian Railways moves closer toward expanding modern rail connectivity and developing faster transportation systems for future growth.
