Jammu, August 8: Jammu and Kashmir is set to receive a major boost in rail infrastructure with the sanctioning of Final Location Surveys (FLS) for several important railway projects, including the proposed 190-km Jammu-Reasi-Poonch rail link.

The development is expected to strengthen connectivity across the Union Territory and improve access to remote and strategically important areas. The Jammu-Reasi-Poonch railway project is particularly significant as it aims to extend rail connectivity beyond the existing network and bring several areas closer to the national railway grid.

Survey Underway for Jammu-Reasi-Poonch Rail Link

The Final Location Survey for the proposed Jammu-Reasi-Poonch railway line has been sanctioned, while field survey work is already underway for preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Once completed, the survey will help determine the technical feasibility, alignment and other requirements of the proposed railway corridor. The project, stretching around 190 kilometres, is being viewed as an important step towards improving connectivity in the Jammu region.

The rail link could also provide greater opportunities for tourism, trade and movement of people by improving transportation access to areas currently dependent largely on road connectivity.

78-Km Additional Jammu-Katra Rail Line Also Sanctioned

Alongside the Jammu-Reasi-Poonch project, a 78-km additional Jammu-Katra railway line has also received sanction for the Final Location Survey.

The additional rail connectivity between Jammu and Katra could strengthen the existing railway infrastructure serving one of the region’s major pilgrimage and tourism destinations. Katra serves as an important gateway for pilgrims visiting the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, making reliable and efficient transportation particularly important.

The proposed expansion could help address future connectivity requirements as passenger movement and tourism activity continue to grow.

Potential Benefits for the Region

The expansion of the railway network is expected to bring several long-term benefits to Jammu and Kashmir. Improved rail connectivity can reduce dependence on road transport, provide more convenient travel options and support the movement of goods and essential supplies.

Better railway infrastructure could also contribute to the region’s economic development by supporting local businesses, tourism and employment opportunities.

For remote and hilly areas, improved transportation links can play an important role in connecting communities with larger markets, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and other essential services.

A Step Towards Better Connectivity

The sanctioning of Final Location Surveys represents an important stage in the development of new railway projects. The surveys and subsequent DPR process will provide the technical and financial details required before further project implementation.

For Jammu and Kashmir, the proposed railway expansion carries significance beyond passenger travel. It reflects a broader effort to strengthen infrastructure, improve regional connectivity and create better opportunities for economic growth.

With survey work progressing on the Jammu-Reasi-Poonch rail link and the additional Jammu-Katra line moving forward at the survey stage, the projects could mark another important chapter in the expansion of Jammu and Kashmir’s railway network.
