Jammu and Kashmir BJP President Sat Sharma addressed a workshop organised on the occasion of Tribal Pride Day at the party headquarters in Jammu, paying tribute to tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda ahead of his 151st birth anniversary.

The programme highlighted the contributions of Birsa Munda to India’s freedom struggle and his enduring legacy in promoting tribal rights, dignity and cultural identity. The occasion also provided an opportunity to recognise the role of tribal communities in the country’s social, cultural and national development.

Addressing party workers and participants, Sat Sharma emphasised the importance of remembering India’s tribal heroes and acknowledging their sacrifices in the struggle against British colonial rule. He highlighted the need to preserve tribal traditions, cultural heritage and historical contributions while ensuring greater awareness about the achievements of tribal communities.

Birsa Munda’s Legacy and Tribal Pride

Bhagwan Birsa Munda, born on November 15, 1875, in present-day Jharkhand, emerged as one of the most influential tribal leaders in India’s freedom movement. He led the historic Ulgulan (Great Rebellion), mobilising tribal communities against British exploitation, oppressive practices and the erosion of their traditional rights.

His courage, leadership and commitment to the rights of indigenous communities earned him a lasting place in India’s history. His birth anniversary is observed across the country as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, following the Government of India’s decision to designate November 15 as Tribal Pride Day in 2021.

Focus on Tribal Heritage and Recognition

The workshop at the BJP headquarters in Jammu reflected the importance of taking the history and contributions of tribal communities to a wider audience. Such programmes also encourage younger generations to learn about the sacrifices of tribal leaders and appreciate the diversity of India’s cultural traditions.

The observance of Tribal Pride Day serves as a reminder that the country’s freedom struggle was shaped by contributions from communities and leaders across different regions.

Through the programme, the BJP leadership paid homage to Bhagwan Birsa Munda and reiterated the significance of respecting tribal identity, preserving indigenous heritage and recognising the contributions of tribal communities to nation-building.
