Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has called upon the armed forces to maintain the highest level of operational readiness to address emerging security challenges, emphasising the need to strengthen domain awareness, cyber resilience and information integrity.

He made these remarks while interacting with Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel at Air Force Station Bagdogra in West Bengal on November 7, on the eve of Diwali. The Defence Minister highlighted the changing nature of modern warfare, stating that national security challenges now extend well beyond conventional military engagements along international borders.

According to Singh, the evolving security environment includes asymmetric warfare, proxy conflicts, cyberattacks, drone swarms and information operations, requiring the armed forces to remain technologically equipped, vigilant and operationally prepared.

Misinformation and Cyber Threats Emerging as Major Challenges

Drawing attention to changing strategies adopted by adversaries, Singh cautioned that attempts to exploit vulnerabilities through misleading information and social media campaigns could create distrust among local communities and security personnel.

He observed that adversaries increasingly seek to avoid direct confrontation while using information warfare to influence public perception and undermine confidence.

The Defence Minister emphasised that the responsibilities of military personnel have expanded in the present security environment, making awareness, discipline and the ability to counter misinformation equally important.

Bagdogra’s Strategic Importance in Eastern Sector

Describing Air Force Station Bagdogra as a strategically significant location, particularly for India’s northeastern region, Singh appreciated the dedication and commitment of defence personnel deployed there.

He said the Air Warriors stationed at Bagdogra serve as an important component of India’s eastern security framework and that their operational preparedness plays a vital role in maintaining regional stability.

The Defence Minister also stressed the importance of maintaining strong relations between the armed forces and local communities. He said the conduct, discipline, language and restraint demonstrated by military personnel contribute significantly to public trust and the image of the armed forces.

He encouraged personnel to strengthen their engagement with residents in and around Bagdogra, highlighting the importance of public cooperation in countering attempts to create mistrust.

Focus on Indigenous Defence Technology

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Singh highlighted the increasing contribution of Indian startups and domestic industries to the development of advanced defence equipment.

He specifically mentioned the development of drones, anti-drone systems and other modern military technologies, appreciating the armed forces for adopting indigenous equipment and developing new skills in drone operations and cybersecurity.

He underlined the importance of transforming the military into a technology-driven force capable of responding effectively to future security challenges.

Second Tour of Duty for Agniveers

During the interaction, Singh also referred to the Union Cabinet’s approval of the ‘Second Tour of Duty’ for Agniveers, describing the decision as a significant Diwali gift.

He said the initiative would provide Agniveers with another opportunity to serve the country. Following completion of the two-year engagement period, they would be eligible for consideration for enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to their willingness and fulfilment of prescribed selection criteria.

The Defence Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare of defence personnel and their families.

Defence Minister Extends Diwali Greetings

Singh extended Diwali greetings to the Air Warriors and their families, wishing them happiness, good health and prosperity.

Acknowledging the sacrifices made by personnel who remain away from their families during festivals while performing their national duties, he expressed gratitude to their family members for their continued support and contribution.

He assured them that the nation would continue to stand alongside the families of armed forces personnel.

Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Air Officer Commanding of Air Force Station Bagdogra Air Commodore Manish Sharma and other senior Indian Air Force officials were present during the interaction.
